Sound Insulation
2.4.2 VDI 4100 - Sound Safety in Houses – Criteria for Planning and Evaluation
The Association of German Engineers (VDI) has more than 150,000 engineers and naturalist
members. With more than 12,000 honorary members, every year the Association promotes the
advancement of technology to develop the latest findings.
In addition to the sound insulation requirements of the sections specified in DIN 4109, VDI 4100
defines the best sound insulation levels between rooms in terms of privacy and higher comfort
in residences or residential-like buildings.
VDI 4100 Regulation consists of enlarged noise protection demands and covers three sound
safety levels:
• Apartment flats
• Duplex, detached and attached houses
• Buildings
VDI 4100 Regulation is not legally binding, but provides guidance in addition to legal
regulations. This regulation is widely accepted by experts.
Noise Security
Definition
Levels (SSt)
Describes an acoustically justified niveau of dwellings based on a low background noise level, where
I annoyances in neighbouring dwellings are reduced on a reasonable and acceptable degree.
For example to be expected for a dwelling, which is also sufficient in its other construction, design and
II related outfit for the average require-ments of comfort measures.
For example to be expected for a dwelling, which also in its other construction and related outfit as well as
III
in its site is sufficient for special comfort measures.
Table 6. System Definitions of VDI 4100
Three different sound protection levels are defined for VDI 4100. Since SSt III represents the
level of highest comfort, it includes the most strict requirements.
