Fire Safety
3.1 DIN 4102 -Fire Behavior of Building Materials and Elements:
Classication of Building Materials
Fire is one of the major causes of home and building disasters. Materials used in places with
high risk of fire must therefore feature low thermal conductivity and high resistance against fire.
It is also essential to block fire between floors and to install pipes in these areas made from
noncombustible or fire absorbent, non-conductive materials.
Flammability Class determines the degree of flammability and combustibility of a material when
it is subjected to a fire. The fireproof class of a material is defined by the extent of its reaction
towards a fire.
Flammability is the ease with which a material will burn or ignite. Internationally, a variety of test
protocols exist to quantify flammability. The ratings achieved are used in building codes,
insurance requirements, fire codes and other regulations governing the use of building
materials as well as the storage and handling of highly flammable substances inside and
outside of structures and in surface and air transportation.
DIN 4102 is the most commonly used fire behavior test standard for building materials.
